Wegmans Ballantyne Opening: New Dining on North Community House Road

October 1, 2026

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, Wegmans opens its first Charlotte store at 11550 North Community House Road. The company first announced the Ballantyne store in April 2024 with a target of fall 2026. It has held to that date, and the Charlotte Observer reported that site talks go back to 2017. Wegmans' own store page still reads "Opening October 14, 2026."

Most coverage of Wegmans has been about square footage and the fans willing to wait in line. The seat count gets less attention. Wegmans is putting a restaurant inside its store, and Reid's Fine Foods has already done the same thing a few minutes away in Ballantyne Quad. A third store is being built up the road from Wegmans. Taken together, Ballantyne's newest grocery stores treat eating on site as part of what they sell.

Wegmans Will Seat Almost 300 People

When the Observer toured the store in May, it described a Market Café and Market Grill with about eight bar seats, 180 indoor seats and 104 outdoor seats. It will offer both table service and pickup. Outside there will be a 4,000-square-foot patio with a children's play area, and the site will have 664 parking spaces.

That comes to roughly 290 seats, which is a restaurant-sized room inside a grocery store. Wegmans' prepared-food lineup fits that picture. WBTV reported sushi, pizza, and chef-made salads and sandwiches alongside the produce, seafood, meat, bakery, deli, cheese, beer and wine departments.

Wegmans describes the store as 110,000 square feet. A separate Charlotte Observer report put it at 112,162. In either case, the Observer said the building is more than double the size of the traditional grocers expanding across Charlotte, including Harris Teeter and Publix. The checkout area gives a sense of the expected volume, with 15 staffed registers and 18 assisted self-checkout stands. Store manager Patrick McGuinness will run the store, and the company expects about 450 full- and part-time employees.

The Ballantyne team has also been working in the community ahead of opening. It has made school donations, taken part in the Charlotte MS Walk and YMCA Run! Ballantyne, supported Ballantyne250 and concerts at The Bowl, and held a listening session with nonprofits in late August. Wegmans says those donations and event sponsorships will total nearly $30,000 before the first customer comes through the door.

Reid's Built the Same Idea at One-Seventeenth the Size

Reid's Fine Foods opened on April 8 at Ballantyne Quad, 14015 Conlan Circle, and held a community grand opening three days later. It took over the former Duckworth's Grill and Taphouse space, so a restaurant space became a market that also has a restaurant.

The store is 6,500 square feet with seating for 110 inside and on the patio. It has a full-service restaurant and wine bar, a coffee bar, a deli counter, and an expanded version of the Reid's butcher shop. Shelves carry premium meats, curated wines, fresh produce, prepared foods, bakery items, local goods and specialty gifts.

The two stores have almost nothing in common on size. Wegmans is about seventeen times larger. On seating, the gap is closer to three to one. Both have treated a place to sit as a core part of the store.

A Third Store Is Coming to the Same Road

Farther up North Community House Road, the old Earth Fare at Toringdon Market is getting a new tenant. Earth Fare's Ballantyne store at 12235 N. Community House Road was set to close by Jan. 31, 2025, and it closed that January. In November 2025, the Observer reported that Whole Foods was developing a store in that 26,546-square-foot space.

The expected location is still a construction site. On Aug. 6, 2026, Axios Charlotte photographed work there. It also noted that Whole Foods had not confirmed the address and that there is no announced opening timeline. Axios placed the site near Miró Spanish Grille and called Ballantyne "the land of the fan-favorite grocery store."

If the Whole Foods opens as expected, North Community House Road will have two of the most talked-about grocery openings in south Charlotte within a short drive of each other. The old Earth Fare space will have gone from empty to a new store in about two years.

The Stores That Were Already Here

The established stores are staying put, and most of them are on different streets. Publix Ballantyne Town Center is at 11222 Providence Road West, Harris Teeter Blakeney is at 9720 Rea Road, and Sprouts Ballantyne is at 15121 Ballancroft Parkway. Publix at Arboretum, 7933 Providence Road, opened in September 2025.

So the grocery map is changing without anyone leaving. Providence Road, Rea Road and Ballancroft Parkway keep the stores they had. North Community House Road picks up the new large-format store, the likely Whole Foods, and the heaviest investment in on-site dining. Reid's sits between the two groups: a neighborhood-sized store at Ballantyne Quad that works as both a market and a restaurant.

Opening Week Lands in a Busy Fall

Wegmans is opening in the middle of a full event season around The Bowl and Ballantyne's Backyard. These are the dates on the published calendars from now through early November:

  1. Oct. 2–4 and Oct. 9–11. OMB's Mecktoberfest at The Bowl.
  2. Oct. 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free Bowl Street Pop-Up Market, which runs on first Saturdays through November.
  3. Oct. 14, 9 a.m. Wegmans opens at 11550 N. Community House Road.
  4. Oct. 16. Feeling 22, a free Taylor Swift tribute concert at TD Amp Ballantyne. Doors open at 6 p.m.
  5. Oct. 24, 4 to 9 p.m. Whiskey, Wine & Fire Festival at Ballantyne's Backyard, with fire gardens and grilling. Tickets are $39 to $75.
  6. Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The last Bowl Street Pop-Up Market listed for the season.

Wegmans has published a 9 a.m. start for opening day but no regular weekly hours. It also hasn't announced an opening-day traffic plan or a grand-opening program. In August, Axios said some fans might pitch tents before opening, though nobody has confirmed a campout. The lane-closure notice for North Community House Road that circulated last fall covered roadwork only through the end of 2025, so it doesn't say anything about conditions this October.

The Bowl's own restaurant lineup is still growing. Brasserie Copain is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza announced an early fall 2026 opening at 14020 Stream Way, Suite 110. Culinary Dropout is coming to 15220 Bowl Street with a two-story dining room, rooftop and indoor bars, a patio and a live-music stage. The Bowl directory still lists both as coming soon, and neither has set an opening day.
